Tentative titles:
- Sparkling Death

Mistake: When Maggie climbs down the stairs in the Gioberti House, a moving shadow can be seen on the landing in the background — ROBERT FOXWORTH started moving towards the stairway too early before the stage direction for Chase's appearance.
|
2 and 7 are the last two figures of the code number of the alarm system in the Gioberti House.
In early script drafts, the dialog between Chase and Maggie about the cartel when Maggie accidentally sets off the alarm in the Gioberti House contained a reference from Chase about Richard's loan note having been purchased by Riebmann. This part of their conversation was changed to avoid being repetitive since it was already established in # 081 that Riebmann bought the mortgage on Tuscany Downs through Klaus Weller.
In # 080, Richard and Terry made a deal: Richard will provide Terry with phony divorce papers and will get this year's harvest from her vineyard in return. In the current episode, however she says he gets control of her vineyard for one quarter of the market price. Explanation: As Terry will continue to own the McKay Vineyards in season 5, this can refer to his getting control only in fact by paying one quarter of the market price for her crop; "control" in that context must refer to the fact she cannot make any profit from her vineyard until the next harvest due to the sale of this year's crop. As far as their agreement in # 080 is concerned, the deal apparently must include both the phony documents and the money for the grapes. Terry certainly would not have agreed to obtain only the phony divorce papers in return for her crop even though her complete fortune was endangered by Joel's threats.
In the scene in the Gioberti House living room when Melissa presents her engagement ring to the family, early script drafts contained a much longer conversation about Joel's disappearance. Terry plays her best show ever, feigning how shocked she is about how suddenly Joel left her, trying to make the family believe that she wanted Joel to be the father of her children and that she was happy for the first time since Michael died. Chase reacts and says to Cole sarcastically in sotto voce: "It's a wonder she doesn't choke mentioning Michael in the same breath as Joel." In rewrites, the situation with Joel's disappearance was handled much more quickly and less detailed.
Season time frame: Joel has been gone for three days (since the end of # 083).
Angela to Greg: "If I'd had a son, he would be worthy of my father's legacy." — This line will get a really ironic meaning considering it will be revealed in the season 6 cliffhanger that Richard is her son.
Besides, Angela adds: "It's just a shame that Julia didn't have more children." — Inconsistency: Although the audience will learn about Christopher only next season, Angela has known about him since he was born. What is she up to with this line? As seen from the production process, however, this is a natural problem: At that time, the writers apparently had no idea they would come up with the Rossini storyline later.
Mistake: Richard takes the photo of Lorraine with his left hand first, but holds it with his right hand in the subsequent frame filmed from across.
This is a mistake caused by the particular close-up filming technique — check # 001 (Chase and Maggie at the Gioberti Family Cemetery) for details.

A privately owned estate in Encino, CA portrays the interiors (entry and sitting room) of Greg's ranch home.
|
In early script drafts, Chase says that Alexander Nikoláou was Jacqueline's husband in the 1950's. In the final script and the episode, however, the decade is not mentioned, but hinted only because Chase says Jacqueline was married to Alexander while he was in high school and college.
|
The establishing shot of the Golden Gate Bridge (filmed towards northeast) is stock footage from a film library.

Uncredited extra PAUL VAN appears in his usual rôle as the mustached Tuscany Valley doctor again — this time at the San Francisco bluffs behind Richard and Terry. For another appearance in this episode, see below.
Compare # 227 for biographical details about this minor rôle and a list of all his appearances throughout the series.
For details about the extra, compare # 014.
The filming location for the scene with Richard and Terry at the San Francisco bluffs with the Pacific Ocean in the background is Palisades Park in Santa Monica, CA.
In early script drafts, this scene was staged in Richard's KRDC office instead of at the bluffs.

The bend near the B & G gas station on the CBS-MTM backlot (behind stage 4) was used for a different purpose in # 073 (see there) and will be used for various other purposes in future episodes; see # 089, 113, 121, 135, 137, 148, 172, 174, 176, 180, 191, 192, 196, 207 and 213.

Mysterious: Why is Lance so surprised about Maggie being at the old B & G gas station? Chase and Maggie's Mercedes-Benz 300 TD is right in front of the building.
Edited scene: When Jean-Louis (Gustav) speaks to Julia in her room at his "clinic", he wants to talk more about her family, particularly about her relationship with her sister. That topic is cut short in the final version of the episode when Julia asks when she will be better. In early script drafts, there was a detailed conversation about what Julia and Emma did together as children — the most fun for them was sneaking comic books into their rooms, something Angela never allowed them in the Mansion; Julia also says that Emma loves the ballet and Mexican food and would like to fall in love and get married. In rewrites, this conversation was changed to Julia saying they did everything together as children — flying kites, ballet lessons (although Julia hated them in contrast to Emma); Julia also mentions that Emma was always a romantic, writing poetry and mooning over a song or a vase of camellias, and she describes herself as the realist and scientist in contrast to Emma. This conversation from the final script draft was filmed, but drastically shortened in post-production. Concerning the ballet reference, see below.

Uncredited extra BARBARA SMITH appears in this episode again as the platinum blonde Tuscany Valley socialite — as a patron at the Tuscany Downs Turf Club.
For details about the extra, compare # 066.
Compare # 221 for a list of appearances throughout the series.

The Agretti pool is featured for the first time: There is a wooden white pool house in background. This is the only time this privately owned property in Encino, CA (the same estate as the one used as Greg's ranch home this episode, by the way) is used as the Agretti pool. In later episodes, the pool will look completely different (compare # 103 and 130).
This scene with Melissa and Cole being surprised by Richard's appearance at the Agretti pool was staged inside the Agretti Residence in early script drafts: Melissa and Cole are discussing in the living room that they have never made love in this room — and, in fact, not in most of the rooms; Melissa says she wants to be able to step in any room and have memories of them together. As Cole asks about the kitchen, and she unbottons his shirt, kissing his chest, she suggests the dining room and upstairs hall, and he continues to suggest the hallways and staircases — as Melissa reacts: "Only the carpeted ones." They are surprised by Richard ringing the bell. Rewrites relocated the scene at the pool with Melissa and Cole just making out when Richard arrives.
Historic allusion: Jean-Louis (Gustav) wants to go to the ballet with Emma to see SHAKESPEARE's "Romeo and Juliet".
The reason that Jean-Louis (Gustav) selected the ballet for his first date with Emma was actually his earlier conversation with Julia. This does not transpire in the final version of the episode anymore since his earlier scene with Julia was shortened (see above).
Seafood is Emma's favorite.
Mistake: In the scene with Emma, Gustav and Angela in the Falcon Crest Victorian Mansion foyer, the difference in how Emma wears her vest in the wide angle shots and the close-ups can be noticed.
This is a mistake caused by the particular close-up filming technique — check # 001 (Chase and Maggie at the Gioberti Family Cemetery) for details.
Angela mentions she (and Emma) have a dinner appointment with Congressman Bertus. The script contained the Congressman's full name: Ted Bertus — a part that will never be shown nor mentioned again.
|
A room at the Encino estate portraying Melissa's pool and Greg's home in this episode is used as Lance and Lorraine's (new) Tuscany Valley Inn room.
|
Mistake: In the scene with Lance and Lorraine, the close-ups are from various takes that were combined in the editing process. This becomes apparent because Lorraine's left hand is in different positions in the subsequent frames.
This is a mistake caused by the particular close-up filming technique — check # 001 (Chase and Maggie at the Gioberti Family Cemetery) for details.
Maggie goes to the Blainfield's, another San Francisco restaurant, with Charlotte. The interior shots are from the Black Forest Inn (nowadays Wilshire Restaurant) in Santa Monica, CA. Beginning in # 096 (see there), the Blainfield's terrace will be featured quite frequently.
The final shooting script included Chase in the restaurant scene. According to the production report dated 11/05/1984, ROBERT FOXWORTH was unreachable for his scene though. The segment was rewritten on the spot in order to shoot without him; Chase's dialog was taken over by Maggie with slight alterations. The master had been printed by the time ROBERT finally showed.
This also resulted in the deletion of an earlier scene in post-production: In that scene, Chase, Charlotte and Maggie were about to leave for the restaurant after Maggie realized that her pearls are nowhere to be found.
Uncredited extra PAUL VAN appears in his usual rôle as the mustached Tuscany Valley doctor a second time in this episode — now as a patron at the San Francisco restaurant where Richard and Melissa meet. For his first appearance in this episode, see above.
Compare # 227 for biographical details about this minor rôle and a list of all his appearances throughout the series.
For details about the extra, compare # 014.
Uncredited extra JULIE SALLES participates again as the brunette Tuscany Valley socialite in her 20's — this episode as a patron at the San Francisco restaurant where Richard and Melissa meet.
Compare # 167 for biographical details about this minor rôle and a list of appearances throughout the series.
For details about the extra, compare # 020.
The exteriors of the Black Forest Inn are used as the terrace of the unnamed San Francisco restaurant where Richard and Melissa meet.
Early script drafts staged this restaurant scene at the Tuscany Downs Turf Club, later intermediate script drafts on the patio of the 890 Café (the KRDC cafeteria).
Director's mistake: Lance dials not enough digits to call Lorraine at her KRDC office from Falcon Crest. For a call from the Tuscany Valley to San Francisco, he would have to dial 1 (415) plus the seven digits of the phone number.
Early script drafts suggested as the cliffhanger Maggie's realization that Charlotte has disappeared just as Chase and Cole enter the Gioberti House with the poisoned Champagne bottle that has a black mourning ribbon around its neck.
